"The Queen's Jubilee"

The NVSO community is deeply saddened by the passing of Her Majesty the Queen. Several months ago, the NVSO repertoire committee selected music for our October 22nd concert as a celebration of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, marking her 70 years on the throne. We believe that her remarkable life, her dedication to duty, and her service to the global community are still worth celebrating, even after her death. Please join NVSO as we recognize Queen Elizabeth II’s passing with a performance of "Nimrod" from Elgar's Enigma Variations - a moving piece that has been performed at many memorials including Princess Diana’s funeral in 1997, and HRH Prince Phillip’s funeral last year. The previously planned "Queen's Jubilee" concert program will follow, featuring British music from the lifetime of Queen Elizabeth II, including music by William Walton, Edward Elgar, Andrew Lloyd-Webber, Debbie Wiseman, the Beatles, and Malcolm Arnold.

Midweek Melodies - Richard Strauss "Serenade in E-flat major, Op. 7"

For our final “Midweek Melody,” we have chosen Richard Strauss’ Serenade in E-flat major, Op. 7. Strauss was seventeen when he composed this piece in 1881. Unlike many of Richard’s later works, which were often very progressive and atonal, this music is melodic and lyrical, and the themes often revel in the rich, full sound of the 13 wind instruments. The recapitulation begins with what is perhaps the most evocatively beautiful moment in the Serenade, as the horns announce the very first theme with great warmth. Richard’s father, a well-known hornist, was most likely very influential in the writing of this piece!

Midweek Melodies - "Point Lookout (A Fantasy on Civil War Songs)" by Brian Balmages

As we approach Memorial Day weekend, this week’s Midweek Melody commemorates a difficult chapter in America’s past, the Civil War. Composer Brian Balmages was inspired by the history of Point Lookout State Park in Maryland. The composition is a fantasy of civil war songs, including: The Battle Cry of Freedom; Battle Hymn of the Republic; America the Beautiful, and When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again.

This Memorial Day, please take time to respectfully honor and mourn all military personnel who have died in the performance of their duties while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

Midweek Melodies - Ludwig van Beethoven "Piano Trio in B-flat major, Op. 11"

Today’s Midweek Melody is the Piano Trio in B-flat major, Op. 11 by Ludwig van Beethoven. Written in 1797 the trio is a light, cheerful piece featuring a clarinet in lieu of violin, which was the more traditional instrument included in a piano trio. The trio is sometimes referred to as the “Gassenhauer Trio”, which means “alley song,” because the third movement is based on a popular tune that was being sung and whistled in the streets of Vienna at that time.
