President's Comments
Happy New Year to All! As we continue in concert season, make sure to refer to the main google band calendar to keep up to date on all the after-school ensembles and band rehearsals. The main events that will occur in the spring semester are WinterGuard, UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest (we are host), Ensemble Recital, Orlando Trip, pre-UIL for CCISD schools (we are host), UIL Concert and Sight-Reading Contest (we are host), Spring Concert, and Band Banquet. As each event gets closer, look for opportunities to volunteer if you can. Also, we are in need of a nominating committee to start filling the open board and committee chair positions for next year, so give this some thought as well!
Ruth Soisson
(Outgoing) FBBC President
FBBC General Meeting Time Change!
The next FBBC meeting is on Thursday, January 20th. This is the same day as the PTA meeting which occurs at 6:30 pm. Several have indicated that they plan to attend this particular PTA meeting, so we will NOW MEET from 7:30 to 8:30 pm so that we can hopefully reach a quorum and vote on important business. Please plan to attend this meeting as we will also discuss all the upcoming events and activities in the Spring semester.
Solo and Ensemble Contest
CLHS is hosting this event on Saturday February 5th and it is a mostly student-run event. All band leadership are required to volunteer and many other band students volunteer as well. Students have a good time hanging out with other band students and helping the event run smoothly, while earning service hours. Usually, there is a morning and an afternoon shift and a sign-up sheet will be posted in the band hall. A few parent volunteers will be needed to provide “hospitality" for the judges throughout the day (breakfast and lunch) and will be reimbursed by UIL. Students from the district will arrive and a certain time, play their solo or ensemble and then leave, so food for students will not be required like it was when we hosted Region Band last December.
Nominating Committee
FBBC is looking for at least 3 members to serve on the nominating committee for next year’s board and committee chair positions. There will be several vacancies next year (especially the FBBC President and FBBC Vice President-Communications, since they are held by parents of graduating seniors). Others may be interested in stepping down or switching to another position. The nominating committee’s job is to recruit members to fill these OPEN positions and are NOT required to actually fill these positions. These efforts usually begin in February with a desire to vote on the new officers at the April/May meeting. If you are interested in serving on the nominating committee, then please send a text to Ruth Soisson at (281) 728-4082.
Ensemble Recital: February 15th
The ensemble recital will take place on Tuesday, February 15th and will occur in various rooms at CLHS. Some ensemble performances are as early as 5:30 pm. In the past, the ensemble recital was followed by “Bites at the Lake” which was an epicurean night with food samples from local restaurants and raffles on various themed baskets containing products and services from area businesses. This year, we are scaling back substantially, but would still like to provide refreshments to celebrate the achievements of our students. If you have any ideas or would like to be on the committee to help, then please text Ruth Soisson at 281-728-4082.
